Robert William Littlejohn was born on September 6, 1947. He grew up on the east side of Vancouver and attended David Thompson Secondary School. Bob began playing rugby in grade 8 and upon graduation, joined the Trojan Rugby Club. It was during his tenure with the Trojans that he became affectionately known as ‘Chubby’ or ‘Chicken’, or ‘Chubby Chicken’.
In 1976, Bob helped guide the fledgling Tsawwassen Rugby Club as one of their first coaches. Over the years the two clubs, Tsawwassen and the Trojans formed a close bond, as a number of former Trojans helped build the foundation of the Tsawwassen club. Some of the highlights of those years were CBC Saturdays, featuring ‘Hockey Night at Chubby’s’; or Bob doing the “Chicken Dance’ at one of our famous Rec. Centre dances.
When Bob was hired by Thrifty Foods, he couldn’t have been happier. The staff at Thrifty’s became part of his extended family. In 2008, Bob took on the coaching duties for the Grade 8 boys team at South Delta Secondary. In 2009, Bob was honoured as ‘Club Man of the Year’ for his dedication and commitment to the school rugby program and inspirational leadership.
Bob was friendly, had a quick wit and was always cheerful. He never had anything bad to say about anyone, loved the underdog and was a loyal friend. A true gentleman, he’ll be dearly missed by all who knew him as their friend.
Bob ‘Chubby Chicken’ took up the challenge of coaching the Grade 8 high school team at SDSS and his love of the game of rugby was instilled into his players. Bob had a big heart and he’ll be sadly missed by the school’s rugby program and by all who knew him. Rest in Peace buddy.
Will miss your smilling face at thriftys and the pitch. Thanks for coaching my boys in grade 8. You will be missed. Thanks garter, itch and mother for the memorial.
